BARNSTABLE – The polling booths are collapsed and stowed away, the votes have all been counted, but one Cape Cod group is concerned about the post-political climate and what it means for communities across the region.
Co-organizer of One Community Mary Petiet told spectators at the group’s first meeting in Barnstable Saturday that she was concerned after reading reports of violence and hate-fueled actions across the nation in response to election results.
“Fundamentally, we have a lot in common and I think we need to remember that,” she said. “We want the same things: safety, good schools, a prospering, healthy community, and for our children to have a good future.”
But part of that future, she said, depends on organization and, most importantly, the willingness to connect with even those who do not share similar values or stances.
Petiet said she hopes One Community will serve as a sounding board for ideas to strengthen communities and to serve as a reminder of what we all have in common.
The group has developed a Facebook page, named One Community.
While riots, incidents in schools and what Petiet called and upswing in hateful actions continues to roil in parts of the nation, the new group aims to branch out to local organizations and policy makers to enact change outside of partisan politics.
“I great hope in the people of the communities on Cape Cod,” Petiet said.
