NANTUCKET – A new high-speed passenger ferry service will transport visitors between Nantucket and New York this summer.

Seastreak has been operating seasonal ferry service from New York to Martha’s Vineyard since 2009 and decided that Nantucket would be an extension of that run.

The Steamship Authority board of governors approved a docking agreement with Seastreak last month, allowing the 141-foot catamaran to dock at the Nantucket terminal on Fridays and Sundays through Labor Day.

“Seastreak is an innovator in introducing new ferry services from New York City to destinations such as Sandy Hook Beach and Martha’s Vineyard,” said Seastreak President Jim Barker. “We are pleased to now offer service between Manhattan, New Jersey and Nantucket.”

Seastreak officials conducted a trial run in June for the service and called it a success, prompting the Steamship Authority to vote on the agreement.

Round trip fares start at $260 with the trip taking approximately six hours from the city to Nantucket and seven hours from New Jersey.

The catamaran seats up to 500 passengers and has three decks.
