HYANNIS – The first meeting for a newly formed Hyannis group took place last week.
The revived Hyannis Historical Society gathered at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum and signed paperwork to establish to group as a nonprofit.
There used to be a historical society years ago in Hyannis, but for unknown reasons it became defunct.
The organization wants to help document and preserve older buildings in town, and includes Barnstable Town Councilor Paul Hebert as its Chairman.
“We re-created this society because we have so much history in the village of Hyannis that we really want to focus on preserving that history for future generations,” said Hebert.
The group is currently looking at what can be done to save the old McEvoy properties on Pleasant Street, which are being considered for redevelopment.
The organization discussed documenting current historic buildings and hosting community events while reaching out to young people.
“We want to point to what exists that people don’t even know exists and secondly, if we can find more materials, more history, more books, more logs, we want to get those displayed to the public also,” said Hebert.
