BOURNE – Construction on the Peebles Elementary School in Bourne is beginning to take shape after a groundbreaking several weeks ago.
The event featured nine students wearing hard hats, digging a shovel full of dirt from the frozen, cement-like ground. Attendees included Congressman Bill Keating.
Bourne School Superintendent Steven Lamarche said they’ll keep a close eye on the budget.
“Other budgetary things are the unexpected costs, whether it would be a facilities related issue that would come forward, a boiler or something of that nature, or a roofing system. Those obviously are budget busters,” he said.
The entire project is slated to cost $40 million, with $15 million coming from the Massachusetts Building Authority.
According to Lamarche, not getting everything asked for is expected.
“The whole budget process isn’t just an ask for us. We do create a list of priorities. We don’t assume we’re going to get every priority we list. Part of that process is we also need to identify things that we’re not continuing to get the value out of,” he said.
The current Peebles School will be demolished upon completion of the new building, which is scheduled for the fall of next year.
