COTUIT – A play exploring the life of the man responsible for the breaking of the Enigma Code, a secret code used by Germany during World War II, is set to run for about three weeks at the Cotuit Center for the Arts beginning July 19th.
Breaking the Code tells the story of Alan Turing, a British mathematician and computer science pioneer.
Play Director Carol McManus says that “Turing was a very brilliant man, it was his idea that a machine could be made to think, and to think better than a human being.”
She went on to say that although brilliant, Turing could be difficult when dealing with others.
The story is told episodically, shifting back and forth in time over a period of 30 years.
The play includes scenes from Turing’s days in public school in the 1920’s through his likely suicide at the age of 41 in 1954.
Breaking the Code premiered in 1986 in London then opened on Broadway in 1987. The play was nominated for three Tony Awards and was adapted for television in 1996.
The work is based on Andrew Hodges’ biography of Turing, “Alan Turing: The Enigma,” which was also the source for the 2014 movie “The Imitation Game,” which focuses more on the details of code Breaking.
The play will run from July 19th through August 5th.
