In a unanimous vote, the Bourne School Committee has decided to name the town’s newest elementary school the Bourne Intermediate School.
School Superintendent Steven Lamarche said that since the district will be moving to organize schools by grade levels, they wanted the name to reflect the change.
“The reason why the word intermediate was important to them as a school committee is because they wanted it to reflect the grade spans that are going to be in that school,” said Lamarche.
The school committee received more than 100 suggestions from the community about what to name the school.
Board members were also given a chance to nominate names to be considered for the building.
Names considered included the Bourne Grade School, the Bourne Community School and the Don M. Morrissey School.
Morrissey worked in the Bourne School District for 46 years and retired as principal of the James F. Peebles Elementary School in 2009 before passing away in 2016.
Construction for the school is on track for the building to open in time for the first day of school for the 2019-20 school year.
Lamarche said that the project is about 60 percent completed and he expects money with be returned back to the town.
“I believe we’re going to finish early and there’s no doubt we’re going to be under budget,” said Lamarche. “Right now we have a contingency of over $4 million. It would be tough for us to foresee tapping into that $4 million in an extensive way.”
