HYANNIS – A new piece of public art is now being displayed on South Street in Hyannis.

The Hyannis HyArts Cultural District unveiled a new inspirational sculpture, called “The Tides,” at the corner of South Street and Pearl Street this week.

The Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce received funding from the state Cultural Council for public art projects.

Once the site was identified by the town, the Chamber issued a call to artists, with nine submitting proposals for Hyannis.

Two juries of outside experts and town liaisons selected local artist Steven Kemp’s Tides monolith.

The nine-foot stoneware clay monolith was designed and created by the potter and cast from the sand patterns created by the Cape’s coastal waters.

The chamber gifted the public art to the Town of Barnstable.
