New Seashore Superintendent Eager to Move Park Into the Future

WELLFLEET – The new superintendent of the Cape Cod National Seashore, who was recently selected by the National Park Service, is excited and looking forward to working with the Outer Cape Communities.

Brian Carlstrom currently serves as Deputy Associate Director for the Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate in Washington, D.C. and take over duties at the seashore in April.

He said he will first take an in-depth look at work being done.

“There’s an outstanding team on the ground there right now that knows the issues inside and out. I’m going to listen to what the communities have and where things are currently at,” Carlstrom said.

“Once I’ve been there for a little bit, [I’ll] determine what will be the most appropriate way forward.”

Carlstrom said the park has many projects to move forward, including the new permanent parking lot at Herring Cove Beach and the Herring River Restoration.

He replaces George Price, who retired last year.

In his current capacity, Carlstrom develops and implements resource stewardship and science policies and direction service-wide.

Before his work at NRSS, his park experience included lead park ranger at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, acting superintendent and chief of resources at Devils Tower National Monument, chief of resources management at Prince William Forest Park, deputy superintendent and chief of resources at Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, and superintendent at Biscayne National Park.

Carlstrom said managing the rich diversity of resources of the National Seashore is intriguing to him and that he believes it is a good fit.

“It was a great opportunity to transition from the Washington office and work back out in the field,” he said.

“I was amazed when I was offered the position and really look forward to getting on the ground and getting started.”
