MASHPEE – A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Thursday at Mashpee Commons to celebrate the commencement of a new solar project at the shopping center.

It  will feed renewable energy back to the local grid, providing a renewable power source for not only the Commons, but surrounding areas as well.

“There’s a logic behind renewable resources and a way to reduce our carbon footprint at the same time as making money, and this is a perfect example of how to do it,” said Mashpee Commons in-house architect John Connell.

A number of solar companies were interviewed last fall and winter and a decision was made to contract the work out to SunBug Solar, a company based in Somerville and Arlington.solar

Solar panels were installed on nine different rooftops within Mashpee Commons, running over 15,000 feet of underground conduit and wires between each building.

The project wrapped up last month and the panels have been operational for about a week.

“I think this is a great opportunity to bring solar power to a wonderful shopping center that cares deeply about the user experience,” said SunBug Solar Vice-President of Commercial Business Nick d’Arbeloff.
