HYANNIS – A new support group for teens to talk about domestic violence has been developed at the Cape Cod Center for Women.
The Teen Group for Healthy Relationships is held at the Falmouth Public Library and is open to 13 to 18 year olds who have experienced or witnessed domestic violence or are struggling with an unhealthy relationship.
Social Worker and Group leader Beccah Tibert said the group was created so that teens could better deal with the issues.
“A lot of the times these issues are not things that you’re hanging out with your friends and talking about,” said Tibert. “This is also providing a space for them to know that they have counselors there willing to speak with them.”
Tibert added that the group has got the attention of area agencies who have told them that this is something that they could refer their clients to.
Fifteen teens participated in the group’s first meeting on September 29.
“Having the support from us and as well being able to learn how to support each other as a group is a huge thing,” said Tibert. “Knowing that you’re not alone in handling these issues and knowing that you’re not the only one going through them is huge.”
The group program is part of the center’s focus to provide care for children and teens affected by domestic violence, by using trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy.
Children 12 and under will also be provided therapy by the center.
