Martha’s Vineyard Bridge Receives National Recognition

drawbridgeMARTHA’S VINEYARD – A Martha’s Vineyard bridge has been recognized by “Roads & Bridges” magazine as one of its top 10 bridge projects of 2016.

The Lagoon Pond Drawbridge is a 350-foot bascule bridge that is opened and closed by a pivoting weight without any raised suspension supports.

Construction on the $43.7 million project began 10 years ago and was completed in two phases. A temporary span opened in January 2010. The permanent bridge opened to traffic in November 2015.

The bridge was designed with substantial attention given to traffic movement, marine safety, environmental considerations and the natural landscape.

The new bridge replaced a draw bridge that was constructed in 1935.
