CHATHAM – It was a damp beginning to 2019 on Cape Cod as public celebrations in Sandwich and Chatham attracted hundreds of revelers despite the rain.
Chatham hosted its 28th annual First Night, with the traditional noise parade, carnival caper and musical acts across the downtown area.
The rain forced the cancellation of the midnight fireworks over Oyster Pond, but the 6 p.m. fireworks show still took place at Veteran’s Field.
Some of the musical highlights this year included a foot-stomping performance by a Garth Brooks impersonator.
The event is a mainstay of the town with hundreds turning out each year for multiple events, competitions, food, and more.
“Over the course of years we’ve been told that the early fireworks are becoming actually bigger than the midnight fireworks and they’re filled with people from buggies to walkers,” First Night Chatham Chair Sally Stratman said prior to the event.
Entering its seventh year of operation, Sandwich First Night welcomed hundreds of party-goers with live music and fireworks for a festive and family-friendly environment.
The annual event almost came to a halt in May when organizers announced their plans to retire.
A partnership was eventually reached to continue First Night, until Suzanne Chambers-Evans took on the position of First Night coordinator by herself.
Evans said her time serving as a Service Unit Manager for the Girl Scouts will help her to head planning efforts for the event.
