SANDWICH – The idea of a Sandwich-residents-only beach parking lot came up at a board of selectmen meeting last month, but was quickly dismissed.
Selectman David Sampson said that although he received no complaints last year, he did get some the year before.
“In the summer of 2016, when we had the new sand on the beach, I received a number of comments and calls and letters from residents regarding the parking lot at Town Neck being full on a pretty consistent basis,” he said.
Selectman Michael miller said he had received a complaint last year about there being no parking and pointed out that, although the lack of parking affects all town residents, it can make it especially tough for people with disabilities.
The board then asked Town Manager George (Bud) Dunham to provide more handicapped parking when the lots are upgraded or repaved.
In an agreement with Bourne, the first 200 residents who apply, can purchase a Sandwich sticker at the same price as residents, who, in return, are able to purchase Bourne shellfish licenses at that town’s resident rate.
Dunham said was surprised by the numbers.
“Sandwich people bought more Bourne stickers than Sandwich people bought Bourne stickers. Both of us had set a 200 sticker cap and we did around half of that,” he said.
In the end, the Sandwich selectmen voted to extend the deal indefinitely, saying that it appears to be working well.
