BARNSTABLE – NOAA Fisheries Office of Science and Technology is teaming up with the NOAA Research Climate Program Office to provide $5 million in grant money for seven new projects over the next three years.
The projects will aim to study the impacts the changing climate is having on the fish and fisheries of the Northeast Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem.
Warming Oceans, rising seas, ocean acidification and hypoxia are impacting marine life and the people, businesses, communities and economies that depend on the fisheries.
The climate-related impacts can affect the abundance, distribution and productivity of fish stocks.
Strong and maintainable fisheries provide jobs, a source of food, recreation and economic activity throughout the nation.
Commercial and recreational fisheries contributed $195 billion to the economy and supported 1.7 million jobs in 2013.
NOAA is taking a proactive approach to make sure fishermen, fishery managers and other decision makers have more information on the impacts of climate change to be better prepared and respond.
The seven projects were selected as part of a competitive grants process.
