NOAH Shelter
HYANNIS – The cold weather has come to Cape Cod and the NOAH Shelter in Hyannis, the region’s homeless shelter, is preparing for the worst.
But an unexpected recent gift has helped the shelter offer critical clothing items to its clients, according to NOAH Director Greg Bar.
Bar explained that TD Bank organized a contest in which a bank customer was asked what they would do with a gift of $20,000. The customer’s response was that they would feed and clothe the homeless.
So TD Bank contacted the NOAH Shelter on Winter Street in Hyannis to organize an afternoon drop-off of winter coats, hats and other winter clothing, as well as a food truck to provide free food to the NOAH clients.
Bar said this time of year, the shelter’s employees go over policies and procedures to be used during the coldest days of winter.
“There’s definitely a lot of preparation mentally, but also procedurally. What are we going to do. We were just talking about it at our staff meeting yesterday. What’s our procedure, because winter is coming quickly,” he said.
The NOAH Shelter is open 365 days a year and donations are welcome.
“If you’re going to donate, donate nice stuff, what would you like. But we can always use winter stuff because the average stay here is 30 days,” he said.
