HARWICH – A new non-profit looking to build a community housing group for younger adults with disabilities is seeking public involvement.
Lower Cape Community Housing is working to build a complex of duplexes to serve 10 to 12 adults who are at least 22 years old and can function by themselves.
The organization will hold its next meeting October 26 at the Harwich Community Center at 4 p.m.
“We need more people to get involved,” said Jeff Locantore, the organization’s founder. “And people who would like to potentially live there, we would like those people to get involved as well.”
Locantore, who suffers from cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder, started the organization to fund the complex after he had difficulty finding affordable housing which suited his needs.
“There’s not a lot of housing on the Cape for anybody on a fixed income, but there is no housing that I have found for just special needs,” Locantore said.
The nonprofit is seeking land for the project from a private sale or from local towns, along with funding.
“Between federal, state, private owners, businesses, towns, whoever can help us is what we’ll take,” Locantore said.
Locantore said they are looking to build five or six duplexes and a common building.
Each unit would include a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room and laundry area.
“The duplexes would give people a little more freedom when they want it,” Locantore said.
