BARNSTABLE – The second nor’easter in the last week is bringing wind, rain, and some mixing snow to Cape Cod, but this storm didn’t pack the punch locally that the weekend storm did.
A 56 mile per hour wind gust was reported in Hyannis. Plymouth checked in with a 54 mile per hour wind gust, while Marstons Mills reported a wind gust of 53 miles per hour.
A coastal flood advisory was in effect for the overnight hours Thursday. Forecasters predicted additional beach erosion, particularly on the ocean side of the Outer Cape.
More than 270,000 outages were reported statewide thanks in large part to strong winds and heavy wet snow. Power outages on Cape Cod were limited.
In Sterling in Worcester County, 18 inches of snow had fallen by early Thursday morning.
Gov. Charlie Baker has announced that state offices for non-emergency executive branch personnel will be closed Thursday.
For those traveling off-Cape Thursday morning, state officials have warned that the commute will likely be a tough one.
“We encourage those who will be traveling to plan ahead, consider allowing extra time to reach their destinations, reduce speeds as needed, and make smart and safe decisions if heading out onto the roads,” said MassDOT Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver.
As of Thursday morning, more than 3,000 pieces of snow removal equipment had been activated across the state by MassDOT.
