Centerville – Norman Nunes, 96 of Centerville, passed away peacefully at his home on April 18, 2017. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Donna S. (Lombard) Nunes.

Norman was born in Harwich, MA on April 4, 1921 to the late Manual and Julia (Rose) Nunes. He graduated from Harwich High School in 1939 and went on to work for a defense plant in Connecticut. In November 1942 he entered the Air Force where he served as a tail gunner on a B24 during World War II. On a bombing mission his plane was struck by enemy fire and he was forced to parachute at night landing behind enemy lines in China. In time, he made his way back through underground. He was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant on November 14, 1945 with two Purple Hearts, Air Medal, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After working over 30 years for H.P. Hood & Sons, he retired as the District Manager for Cape Cod and the Islands. He also served on the Board of the Harwich Finance Committee in which he became chairman. For many years he served as a member of the Board of the Bass River Savings Bank and the Board of Cape Cod Hospital.

Norman greatly loved his wife and family. Family was important to him and always came first. He was there to listen, help, and be our rock. He enjoyed cooking, especially Sunday and holiday dinners. He was a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox, Celtics and N.E. Patriots.

Norman leaves the love of his life, his wife, Donna S. Nunes. He also leaves his five children, Norman J. of Harwich, Charles K. of Centerville, Barry H. of Harwich, Stephen C. of So.
