BARNSTABLE – The harsh winter has caused problems in Barnstable Harbor.

Barnstable Assistant Harbor Master and Marina Manager Eric Shufelt said the ice has caused widespread damage over the last two to three weeks.

“We’ve had extensive damage over on the north side in Barnstable Harbor,” said Shufelt. “With a majority of our pilings, I think it’s 36 out of 38 piles that we have hold our float system in place, have either pulled up, pushed over or snapped off.”

The next step will be finding contractors.

“We’ve got a pretty good assessment of what the problem is and now we are working at a resolution in trying to find a contractor or contractors that could come in and repair and replace those piles.”

Shufelt said he hopes the repairs will be made in time for the May season.

“It’s a big question mark right now,” said Shufelt. “A lot of the contractors out there that can do this work have work that they have contracted prior to this and at this time they are still iced in at those other harbors.”

Shufelt says the town is still not sure how much repairs will cost, but expects the work to be expensive.
