NRC To Address Pilgrim Performance At Public Meeting

PLYMOUTH – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting Wednesday night on the performance of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth.

Federal officials will share information on their annual assessment of the plant, which is currently under additional NRC scrutiny following a number of safety violations over the last few years.

The plant’s standing in the NRC’s eye was downgraded in September 2015 stemming from the unplanned shutdown of Pilgrim during the January 2015 blizzard. It is currently one of the worst performing nuclear reactors in the country, along with two reactors in Arkansas.

Tonight’s meeting is planned for 7 p.m. at Hotel 1620, the old Radisson, on Water Street in Plymouth.

Pilgrim is scheduled to close no later than 2019. Plant owner Entergy says it is no longer financially viable.
