NRC To Release Pilgrim Inspection Findings Tonight

PLYMOUTH – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will discuss the results of their recent inspection of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station at a public meeting Tuesday night in Plymouth.

Federal officials spent three weeks in December and January reviewing the plant’s safety culture after Pilgrim was placed under increased federal oversight in 2015 for a series of safety violations and unplanned shutdowns.

The station’s Column 4 ranking makes it one of the three worst performing reactors in the nation and is one step away from a federally-mandated closure.

At a meeting in January, NRC officials indicated the plant could face an additional 10 to 15 safety violations stemming from the special inspection.

In addition to providing details on the recent special inspection, officials will also discuss their annual assessment of the plant as part of Tuesday’s meeting.

“We look forward to the opportunity to meet with Entergy and to provide the public with further details and results from our team inspection and our annual assessment of Pilgrim,” said NRC Region I Administrator Dan Dorman. “We remain committed to ensuring the plant continues to operate safely through the protect end of its operational life in 2019.”

Pilgrim is scheduled for one final refueling this year before closing in 2019.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at Memorial Hall.
