Year-Round Bus Service on Nantucket Set to Launch

NANTUCKET – The Nantucket Regional Transit Authority is inviting the public to join them for a celebration to kick-off year-round bus service across the island.

While the ‘WAVE’ buses have been operating since late April, this month’s event marks the official celebration of the extension.

Paula Leary, NRTA Administrator, said the idea came into play after the company started a “feasibility study that had overwhelming support, and people showed that they would use the bus, that the bus was needed year round.”

Festivities will be held on Friday, September 28th at the Greenhound Building beginning at 10 AM.

The service is scheduled to run from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, and from 7-7 on the weekends.

The ‘WAVE’ provides island-wide fixed bus routes from Madaket to Sconset Surfside to Jetties Beaches, the Nantucket airport, downtown, and the mid-island areas.

Dates and times of service do vary depending on the route.

“We did some active workshops where people could come in and show where they wanted to take the bus from and too, and when they wanted to use it,” said Leary.

That helped administrators to make the decision to bring the idea into reality.

NRTA’s operations team would like to inform riders that services will be pared down from routes available during the summertime, but will include the Mid-Islands loop, the Miacomet loop, and the Sconset loop via Old South Road.
