BOURNE – A run from New York City to Cape Cod to raise money and awareness for Heroes in Transition came to a conclusion Saturday night as 12 participants crossed the Bourne Bridge.

The “Ruck-4-HIT” (Heroes in Transition) included a limited field of 12 runners and their support crew on a mission from Ground Zero in New York City to Cape Cod.

Each participant ran five to seven miles at a time, carrying a rucksack weighing up to 30 pounds strapped to their back.

Ruck-4-HIT was created to raise awareness and funding for Heroes in Transition, Inc. and its Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Assistance Dog Program.

The team left New York on Thursday at 3 a.m. and arrived on Cape Cod just after 6 p.m. Saturday.

Relay member Nicole Spencer said her brother was the first soldier to receive a therapy dog through Heroes in Transition, which was founded by Gold Star Mother Cyndi Jones.

Jones’ son, Eric, was killed in a helicopter collision during a combat mission in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan in 2009.

Spencer said they started in New York, “because this is where the war began.”

It costs approximately $15,000 to acquire and properly train a specialized service dog.
