BARNSTABLE – With turtle stranding season underway, local officials are reminding the public what to do if they see them on area beaches.
People are asked to move the turtles above the high tide line and to never grab or hold the turtle by the head or flippers.
They’re also asked to cover them with dry seaweed or wrack and mark their location with a piece of debris.
Officials said that although turtles will appear lifeless, they still may be alive.
If anyone comes across a stranded turtle, they’re asked to call the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary at 508-349-2615, extension 6104.
Sea turtles are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act.
It is illegal to harass sea turtles or transport them without a permit.
