COTUIT – A corridor study is being conducted on Route 28 in Cotuit to address safety and congestion and local officials are seeking input from the public.

The Cape Cod Commission and the town of Barnstable will hold a public meeting next Wednesday which will include an overview of project goals and the existing conditions followed by an interactive group discussion.

The study encompasses the section of Route 28 from Santuit-Newtown Road to Route 130 which has been identified as an area for investigation due to congestion issues and high crash rates at both intersections.

Transportation planner for the Cape Cod Commission Steven Tupper said the purpose of the public meeting is to gather input from residents.

“We’ll bring some basic information about crash history, traffic volumes and that sort of thing but we really want to hear what the residents have to say – what they would like to see on the roadway,” Tupper said. “We’ll come up with some potential alternatives based on their recommendations to try to reduce congestion in the corridor, improve safety and try to accomadate all users including motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians and transit users.”

The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cotuit Freedom Hall.

A second meeting is being planned for the fall to discuss possible improvement solutions.

The latest information is available on the website for the corridor study at www.capecodcommission.org/route28cotuit.
