BOSTON (AP) — Boston health officials are vaccinating hundreds of homeless residents against a bacterial infection that killed a homeless man earlier this week.
The Boston Globe reports the victim was among three homeless men who’ve come down with meningococcemia this year.
Two men got sick in January but recovered. Monday’s fatal case appears to be unrelated to the others.
City health officials say they grew concerned when three cases occurred in the same population over a short period of time.
The Boston Public Health Commission has launched a vaccination campaign among homeless people and shelter workers as a precaution.
Boston Health Care for the Homeless has administered antibiotics to people who were in close contact with the three infected men.
They say there’s no threat to the general public.
