Offshore Wind Developers Secure Lease for New Bedford Terminal

windfarmNEW BEDFORD – An agreement has been made between the state and offshore wind developers to lease the New Bedford Commerce Terminal.

The Baker-Polito administration signed a letter of intent with DONG Energy, Deepwater Wind and OffshoreMW to lease the terminal as a staging and deployment area for future wind projects.

The developers hold leases for wind development 14 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard in a federally identified offshore wind development area.

“Massachusetts has achieved another major milestone in securing a clean energy future for the Commonwealth’s ratepayers,” said Governor Charlie Baker in a statement. “With this agreement, Massachusetts stands to recognize jobs and economic benefits from this emerging sector within the clean energy industry, and will continue to lead the nation in offshore wind development and renewable energy innovation.”

The letter of intent through the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center represents a two-year commitment to lease the terminal for $5.7 million each year.
