One-Week Blitz Build Begins Monday Morning in Harwich

habitatHARWICH – A marathon housing building project begins Monday morning in Harwich.

The 2015 Blitz Build for Habitat for Humanity will construct a two-story house on Oak Street in Harwich.

Donations of time, expertise, materials and money were made from the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod and over 50 local companies, according to Habitat Executive Director Victoria Goldsmith.

Goldsmith said that’s what separates this build from other Habitat projects.

“Instead of building it with community volunteers, these will all be professionals who are contributing their services,” she said.

Gail O’Rourke, who chairs the steering committee for the build, said this unique element speaks to a sense of cooperation and good will in the community.

“While there’s a lot of builders usually in the field competing with each other, this is an opportunity for everyone to work together: framers working with framers, painters working with painters, and it really solidifies the group as a team,” she said.

The Vasquez family, who will move into the home the Sunday of the week it is built, have also been contracted to what Habitat calls “sweat equity.” They will help build other Habitat homes in the area as part of their agreement with the nonprofit.

The finished home will be dedicated at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 26th – the newly-established 1104 Oak Street, Harwich.
