OneCape Summit to Focus on Implementing Water Quality Solutions

cape cod commissionHYANNIS – The Cape Cod Commission will be reviewing the progress made on the Cape Cod Area Wide Water Quality Management Plan Update at a summit being held later this week in Hyannis.

The two-day OneCape summit will focus on the execution of solutions in the Section 208 Plan Update for clean water across the Cape.

“This conference really will outline a path forward on how towns can collaborate and work together to make sure these solutions are implemented,” said Cape Cod Commission Deputy Director Kristy Senatori.

The summit will be held Thursday and Friday at the Resort and Conference Center and will include breakout sessions on regulation, financing, community engagement and watershed scenario planning.

The keynote speakers for the event include Cape and Islands State Senator Dan Wolf, Therese Murray, the former president of the State Senate, and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 1 Administrator Curt Spaulding.

Senatori said decision makers and the general public are welcome at the summit which will also include presentations from towns that are implementing alternative systems.

“They’ll be some storm water projects, some shellfish projects and some innovative alternative septic systems that will be profiled at the conference,” she said. “You’ll also be able to hear some details about a comprehensive monitoring program for technologies and water quality across the Cape.”

Senatori said the initial price tag for solutions for the region was $6-8 billion. She said having the towns work together to implement some of these solutions have brought cost estimates down to $2-3 billion.

“It’s still not an affordable number yet but with additional resources and collaboration we know those costs can be decreased,” she said.
