BARNSTABLE – British Adventurer Sarah Outen, who is attempting to row across the Northern Atlantic Ocean on the final leg of her journey around the world, sang to start her latest phonecast posted to her website Wednesday.

“1,000 miles to go. 1,000 miles to go. 1,000 of the Atlantic left. 1,000 miles to go.”

Outen left Chatham on May 14 and is heading for Falmouth, England.

She had picked up the pace in early August and was traveling about 50 to 60 miles per day but current weather conditions have slowed her down again.

“It is really slow rowing,” she said. “I’ve been putting in 15, 16 or even 17 hours on the oars over the last few days and generally only making about 12 to 15 miles.”

Outen said the reason for the slow progress is she has been rowing against a southeast current and a lack of wind.

During her phonecast on September 21, Outen said she was over the Mid Atlantic Ridge.

“I can tell the water is shallower here by the color of the water,” she said. “It’s almost kind of a sea coast green color than sort of the really piercing turquoise.”

She also spotted several dolphins which she said is always a delight. Although she doesn’t believe they felt the same way.

“I guess they weren’t too interested in me or maybe they heard my singing. One group certainly turned and went off in a totally different direction once they clocked that I was in the area,” she said, using a British term for noticed.

Outen recently said that she now expects to make landfall in late October or into November, but doesn’t think she will have enough food to last the remainder of the trip.

Food is not the only thing she is rationing. Outen said the charger for her iPod has broken.

“Each day I am rationing myself to five songs and I listen to them once,” she said. “I seem to keep choosing Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’ and I will listen to that for two or three of my song choices every day but I love it.”

The trip also might not get easier as the weather could get rough as the peak season for hurricane activity in the Atlantic nears.
