ONSET – The fundraising effort for the Onset Bay Center headquarters has passed the halfway point after the Buzzards Bay Coalition and Town of Wareham received a state grant last month.

The $350,000 Seaport Economic Council grant will help to restore the Onset Bathhouse to become a new on-the-water exploration center.

The restoration project will include reconstruction and expansion of the original second level to serve as a classroom and gathering space.

The project will also include boat storage for a fleet of small sailboats, rowboats, kayaks and stand up paddle boards.

The center will provide programming for residents and visitors near the Onset Pier, Onset Beach and Wickets Island. It will help community members build a connection with Buzzards Bay through activities, including sailing, paddling, shellfishing and shoreline ecology.

More than $3.3 million has been raised for the $5.3 million project. Construction is expected to begin after Labor Day.
