Open Streets Event Returns to Main Street Hyannis Sunday

HYANNIS – They’ll be walking, dancing, biking and socializing on the streets of Hyannis Sunday.

The Greater Hyannis Civic Association’s Open Streets event will close down Main Street to traffic from Ocean Street to Sea Street from noon to 5 p.m. to increase awareness of what downtown has to offer and bring the community together.

“By closing the streets and keeping the cars off, we have people of all abilities, all ages, who come down and just enjoy what has been beautiful weather and a lot of great activity,” said Deb Krau, the president of the civic association.

Along with businesses being open, the event will include live music, dance groups, face painting and a kid’s area on the Village Green with inflatable obstacle courses.

“It’s safe for everybody. You can bring the kids down let them ride their bicycles even if they are just learning,” said Jane Walsh, an executive board member of the civic association.

Krau said there aren’t a lot of opportunities today to get together with neighbors and chat and get caught up.

“One of the things we’ve seen in the Hyannis Open Streets we’ve held to date is people are running into people they grew up with, people they’ve been involved with in other events and they just get together, get caught up, sit down at one of the restaurants and have some coffee,” Krau said.

Another Open Streets event will be held October 22.
