Hyannis Open Streets Fundraiser Set For Thursday

HYANNIS –  The first of several Hyannis Open Streets events will happen with a celebration and fundraiser at emBargo on Main Street in from 5 to 8 PM Thursday.

Those in attendance will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, 50/50 and gift basket raffles, and more.

Open Streets is scheduled to take place on April 22nd, May 20th, September 23rd, and October 21st, which are all Sundays.

“The concept is for people of the community to come together in areas where they normally wouldn’t be able to because of traffic.  We close the streets to traffic which allows people to walk and bike, there’s live music, they can dance if they like,” said founder Jane Walsh.

There will also be games, and health-promoting activities.

The annual event started in 2016, the result of a coalition consisting of the Greater Hyannis Area Civic Association, the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District, the Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce, local merchants and residents.  The newly formed group presented its plans to public officials and prospective sponsors.

The first Hyannis Open Streets attracted 7000 people.

Walsh said it’s a social event as well as an exploration.

“It’s a great opportunity to see their neighbors, also to see what the historic downtown has to offer.  It’s a great way for people to come out, get some fresh air and check out some new places on Main Street,” she said.

It is hoped that closing the streets to traffic will encourage people to use more environmentally friendly transportation methods such as walking, bicycling, skateboarding and more.
