Open Streets Returns to Hyannis for 2018 Season

HYANNIS – The Open Streets Campaign returned to Main Street Hyannis Sunday, as the road was shut down to traffic and opened up to pedestrians.

Music, dancing, and rhythmic poetry greeted the numerous families who turned up for the first Open Streets Event of the season.

Trevor the Juggler, an inflatable obstacle course on the Green, and a kid’s zone featuring numerous games and activities were among the features of yesterday’s event.

The local event is one of a hundred similar Open Streets to transform busy towns across America. The purpose is not only to spur local business and keep money in the community, but also to foster increased usage of self-powered transportation.

The Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District and Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce partnered to bring the program to Hyannis last year, hosting a handful of events across the shoulder seasons.

“By closing the streets and keeping the cars off, we have people of all abilities, all ages, who come down and just enjoy what has been beautiful weather and a lot of great activity,” said Deb Krau, the president of the civic association.

The community was fully involved as well, with businesses opening their doors to host events, and numerous volunteers throughout the street.

Plans are already in the works for the next Open Streets – Hyannis, it is scheduled for May 20th.
