ORLEANS – Special Town Meeting in Orleans last night was well attended, with over 400 people voting on a 12 articles.
Residents approved the big ticket item, a Proposition 2 1/2 debt exclusion to replace the doors and windows at the Orleans Elementary School.
“The windows and doors were almost 60 years old, believe it or not,” said Chairman of the Orleans Board of Selectmen David Dunford. “It was long overdue and very strongly embraced.”
The price tag for the project is about $1.1 million dollars, however the town expects to receive up to 37 percent of the cost matched by the state.
Residents also chose to fund streetscaping improvements at Main Street’s intersections with Route 6A and Route 28 after making some cuts to the plans to save about $70,000.
“The rest of the project, totaling $482,000, was passed and passed very strongly by the town and they will be moving forward. So again, a good discussion with a very good outcome,” said Dunford.
