ORLEANS – Beach fees at both Nauset and Skaket beaches in Orleans will increase this summer, a direct correlation to the increase in shark activity in local waters.

The town is facing an increase of $170,000 to its annual beach budget, due to its efforts to make the nearly eight miles of Nauset beach safer for beachgoers.

These efforts include installing two additional, taller lifeguard or head stands, as well an additional patrol vehicle and receiver equipment that relays real-time information and alerts staff immediately if a tagged shark is in the area.

The fees for a non-resident daily beach pass will increase from $15 to $20, and in addition, the town will extend its season to September 18. The increase is expected to generate about $235,000 of additional revenue for the town.
