Orleans Board of Selectmen May Become a Select Board

ORLEANS – Orleans could be the latest town on Cape Cod to rename their Board of Selectmen, if voters approve the plan at town meeting.

Selectmen last week unanimously supported a proposal to change the name to Select Board, in an attempt to be gender neutral.

Alterations would have to be made to the town charter after a public hearing on the matter.

“I’ll work with town counsel and put together a warrant article that [says] anywhere the word ‘Selectmen’ appears shall be changed to ‘Select Board,’” Town Adminstrator John Kelly told Selectmen.

Before the change could become official, voters would also have to approve the plan at the ballot box and the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office would have to sign off on it.

Brewster and Provincetown are among the towns on Cape Cod that have adopted the Select Board name. Chatham selectmen voted against a similar plan to rename their board earlier this year.

Orleans selectmen also discussed the possibility of moving town meeting to Saturdays in the future instead of the traditional Monday, in an attempt to increase attendance. The matter would be considered at future meetings and no action was taken.
