Orleans Kicks off 1918 Commemoration of U Boat Attack

ORLEANS-  Orleans will be hosting a commemoration of the attack on the town by a German U-Boat during World War I.

At the event, local historians Bonnie Snow, Ron Petersen, Duane Chase, and Michael Hicks will discuss the impacts that the attack had on residents at that time, as well as shedding light on why Orleans was the target of the sub, as well as background on the Navy counter attack.

The symposium will also feature a recording of the voice of Reuben Hopkins who observed the attack while serving in the Coast Guard at Station 40.

The event will be held May 17th at 7 p.m. in the Snow Library.
