Orleans, Seashore Both Claim Ownership of Nauset Spit

Beach TracksORLEANS – The discussion over the ownership of Nauset Spit continues, and that could have an impact over ORV use on the beach.

Orleans maintains they own the spit, but the National Park Service says that land falls under the jurisdiction of the Cape Cod National Seashore.

“Determining what party does own the land will very much determine the feasibility and probability of success of any kind of restoration of a practice that our town has been pursuing for a number of decades,” said Orleans Chairman of the Board of Selectman David Dunford.

Selectmen from Orleans, Eastham, and representatives from the Seashore met last week to discuss the matter.

Dunford said the dialogue between the parties will continue to hash out the issue.
