ORLEANS – Orleans selectmen have given approval for the town administrator to get further bids and cost estimates for a new police station.

In the spring, voters approved $670,000 for the police station building committee to prepare design plans and bid documents for the station which is estimated to cost over $11 million.

Orleans Selectman John Hodgson said a new facility is needed.

“The building is in dismal condition,” he said. “It’s an old fire station that got turned into a police department and there are leaks and mold. It’s a bad situation down there.”

Hodgson said the committee has been hard at work on plans.

“We’ve got a great committee that is putting a lot of work and effort into designing a new facility,” he said.

If town meeting and voters at town election approve the new station, the next step would be to set up temporary housing for the department which could cost about $600,000, according to Hodgson.

The town would get help from Eastham and Brewster to house any prisoners because Orleans is not looking to build any temporary cells.

The plans call for a one-story facility with a garage.

Hodgson said he would like to see the Cape become more regionalized with these types of facilities.

“It really is something that needs to start to be on all the towns’ radars because it makes no sense whatsoever for every single town to build these facilities,” he said. “It’s not cost effective for every town to have new police departments, new fire stations, new wastewater treatment plants and new DPWs.”

Hodgson said there is a cost savings to be had in that area.
