Orleans Town Meeting Voters OK Main St. Sewer Project

ORLEANS – Orleans residents took the first step toward installing a sewer in the downtown area at Monday night’s town meeting.

By more than the two-thirds required majority, voters approved spending $3.68 million to lay pipe under Main St. from Route 28 to Old Colony Way.

Voters will have to give final approval to the plan at the ballot box on October 24.

There was concern that if the project didn’t happen now, the town would be delayed by at least five years if the state moved forward with a paving project.

The state doesn’t allow new roadwork to be ripped up for other projects for five years.

Several other articles related to the wastewater project also passed.

In other action, Orleans residents approved money for a new HVAC system at the Orleans Elementary School and $40,000 for a new rescue boat and trailer.
