Orleans Woman Looks to Build Dog Park

golden-retriever-dog-1364426710r9xORLEANS – A woman who recently moved to Orleans is looking to add a dog park to the community.

Deborah Chalsty is willing to fund the park either on a piece of town owned land or by purchasing a private parcel.

Orleans Selectman John Hodgson, a friend of Chalsty’s, brought up the idea this fall during a selectmen’s meeting.

“Right now there doesn’t appear to be a town piece of land available so that component might be off the table,” said Hodgson. “I know right now she is looking for private parcels of land where she could do something like this.”

According to Hodgson, Chalsty said that she travels around the world and dog parks are popping up everywhere and that she wanted to put in one in Orleans.

“Everybody has dogs. They bring the dogs on vacation. They bring the dogs to the hotels,” he said. “It’s just a phenomenon in our society right now.”

Hodgson said you can tell how popular pet ownership is now with the number of specialty stores that are popping up.

“Dog stores used to be something where you could buy a chew toy and some dog food,” he said. “Now you can get dog massages – you name it. It’s a regular industry.”

Hodgson said the next step is to find the piece of land and then get attorneys involved to find out how all the components will work.

“She is quite eager to do it,” he said. “She just recently moved to town and is thrilled to improve her community.”
