ORLEANS – A beach retreat project at Nauset Beach in Orleans could begin as early as next year.
The first phase of the project would fill a large hole in the dune, demolish buildings and remove part of the parking lot.
A second phase would reconstruct the dune and reconfigure the lot.
Leslie Fields, a coastal geologist with the consulting Woods Hole Group, recently discussed the projects before selectmen.
“We are working now to permit that project as quickly as we can to reduce risk to the buildings and to the town’s infrastructure,” Fields said. “We plan to have permits for everything for the beach retreat project for phases one and two, including Hubler Way, by the end of 2017.”
Fields also informed selectmen that the permitting process for the dredging of Nauset Estuary could take another year if material is used to replenish a National Seashore beach.
The delay would be to conduct a National Environmental Policy Act review.
“Because we had identified taking some of this dredged material and putting it on the beach here at Nauset Beach, that’s what triggers the need for a NEPA review, Fields said. “That was a new piece of news and it’s going to slow the process down.”
