Outer Cape Police Once Again Holding Gun Buyback Effort

WELLFLEET – Police departments on the Outer Cape are taking part in a gun buyback program this week in an attempt to secure unwanted firearms.

This is the fourth year Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown have teamed up for the effort. The voluntary program runs until May 15 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.

Wellfleet Police Chief Ron Fisette said they often encounter residents who have received a gun from next of kin and aren’t sure what to do with it. Residents who have an unwanted firearm can contact their local police department, who will then arrange a time for an officer to come pick up the gun.

“We don’t want people transporting firearms or ammunition without the proper permit,” Fisette said.

“Our main concern is just the safety,” Fisette said. “We want these guns in a safe place, a safe manner, and we want to assist the residents.”

Officers will also check the unwanted gun to see if it has any monetary value. Police have, at times, encountered antique, rare, or collectable firearms and have advised residents that they might want to sell the guns instead.

For turning in a firearm, residents will receive a $50 gift certificate to a local business.

Since 2013, 54 guns have been turned in as part the program.

The turned-in firearms are then given to the Massachusetts State Police for destruction.
