BOSTON – More than $2.5 million has been awarded by the Baker-Polito Administration to 12 Commonwealth communities.
The money will be used to protect 660 acres through the Land Acquisitions for Natural Diversity, or LAND, Grant Program.
The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’ Division of Conservation Services oversees the program.
The goal is to protect diversity and address climate change throughout the state.
Three of the grants are being awarded to local projects.
Brook Corridor Fields in Plymouth is receiving $69,600.
One of the last areas of open space in downtown will be preserved.
In Brewster, The Meetinghouse Road Aquifer is getting $226,343, allowing the town to purchase a large block of pine-oak forest, which will add wildlife habitat and aquifer protection.
The trails on this property will connect to a 60 acre conservation area.
A 34-acre historic working farm property will now be owned by the town of Falmouth, thanks to a $400,000 grant.
Tony Andres Farm is adjacent to the Coonamessett River, so this purchase will allow for watershed protection.
A walking path will be created and will be part of the Coonamessett Greenway Project.
Governor Baker says the projects will protect “…beautiful open space and wildlife habitat for generations to come.”
