BOURNE – Volunteers flocked to the Trowbridge Tavern in Bourne Saturday to lend a hand in Cape Cod Cares for the Troops’ efforts to send those stationed overseas some seasonal greetings.
The volunteers assembled nearly 1,200 care packages stuffed with Christmas cards, food and other items.
Many of them were troops who have returned home after receiving a package on their tour.
Organizer Michelle DaSilva said those individuals remember the feelings of joy they felt when they received theirs, and wish to give back.
“It’s important whether you are military or non-military to give back to those who are still serving,” DaSilva said.
But the organizations’ efforts won’t end when each box is thoroughly taped and addressed.
DaSilva said that they are in great need of monetary donations to cover the costs of shipping.
Each package can cost between $15 and $22 dollars to send overseas, and DaSilva said that this year was a difficult one for fundraising, as local and presidential elections took some of that available money away.
“Right now, we’re about $7,000 short of the shipping; it’s a lot of money,” DaSilva said.
