PROVINCETOWN – Officials in Provincetown have enacted a number of new regulations governing motorized scooter usage in town.
The rules apply specifically to URB-Es which are available for rent in Provincetown and have been the subject of numerous complaints from both motorists and pedestrians.
“There’s concern about travel on Commercial Street in both directions, concern about riding while impaired, concern about use helmets, enforcement of the rules of the road, concern about the need to maintain insurance and concern about the lack of a licensing process,” said Assistant Town Manager David Gardner.
URB-Es are two-wheeled, battery operated scooters which can reach speeds of 18 miles per hour and have up till now operated under rules similar to bicycles.
Under the new policy, the vehicles will be required to travel with the flow of traffic and keep off of town-owned bike racks.
Heather Baker, Co-Owner of Coast Provincetown, the town’s URB-E rental store took issue with the new regulations.
“Now if a car parks in the wrong place doesn’t get towed immediately, it gets a ticket,” she told the board.
“This seems a little over the top and it also seems a little focused,” she said.
Coast Provincetown had argued that the vehicles should be regulated like bicycles. The scooters have been the subject of numerous complaints from both motorists and pedestrians.
