WEST YARMOUTH – A river walk park and boardwalk could soon be coming to Route 28 in West Yarmouth.

Selectmen recently voted to accept a five-step recommendation from the Drive-in Site Utilization Committee to develop the 22-acre parcel into the recreational area, which could also be used for events and festivals.

“We determined that it is important to retain the drive-in property for recreational uses and not dispose of it for any other purpose,” said James Saben, the chairman of the committee.

Town voters approved a purchase of the property in 1985 to be used for recreation.

The committee’s recommendations were presented to selectmen after meeting 17 times over the last year, along with gathering input from the public.

Selectman Erik Tolley said he is warming up to the project which could have a total price tag around $10 million.

“I have gone from not at all warm and fuzzy to moderately warm and fuzzy,” Tolley said. “I can envision it being a very nice place to be.”

The board did not commit funds or a timetable for the full project and will consider the recommendations by the committee on a step by step basis.

Short-term recommendations include adding green space, parking, electricity and Wi-Fi.

Future steps would include finalizing a design for the proposed park and boardwalk.
