BREWSTER – There will no parking on Brewster’s freshwater and saltwater beach roads after selectmen recently approved a summer-long parking ban.
No parking signs went up last week on a number of roads, including Paines Creek, Robbins Hill, Saints Landing and Run Hill.
The ban runs all day, every day until Labor Day.
Brewster Police Chief Richard Koch said there are exceptions.
“If somebody has the opportunity to get off the pavement, which is a very rare event, they will be safe, but anybody whose wheels are anywhere near the pavement or the white fog line, will be ticketed with a $30 fee,” said Koch.
The town has less than 400 beach parking spaces and over 10,000 residential and visitor stickers have been sold.
Town officials have contacted the Department of Conservation and Recreation to use the land behind Crosby Mansion, which sits on Nickerson State Park, for beach parking overflow, but have not heard back.
Selectmen are also discussing the possibility of providing shuttle service and offsite parking, but those plans won’t be done in time for this summer.
Koch said police could not do much in the past when there were parking violations.
“Now we have the authority which we couldn’t find in the past. We had postings, but we didn’t have the necessary authority behind it,” said Koch.
