Pens Resembling Hypodermic to be Discontinued at Local Store

NeedlepenYARMOUTH – A local seasonal store, known for catering to tourists, recently caught some negative attention after selling pens which resembled hypodermic needles.

Some of the pens, sold at Wings in Yarmouth and Hyannis, were crafted to appear as though they had been drawn, with fake blood inside the translucent chamber.

Deputy Yarmouth Police Chief Steve Xiarhos said he had an officer ask Wings to stop selling the products, reasoning it is in poor taste on the heels of a regional opioid epidemic.

The deputy chief said the company was cooperative.

“It’s a very well-run store, and once we expressed our concerns they called back and removed them,” he said. “A lot of times, just pointing out the other side of the issue and how it can send the wrong message helps.”

Emergency response departments across the Cape have noted increased responses to overdose calls in recent years.
